Whatfs CSJThe purpose of the Carbon Society of Japan is the technological development in the fields of basic and applied sciences of the carbon materials and the wide diffusion of those researches. The journal "TANSO" is published 5 times a year and contributes to further researches and enlightenment in this field. In July, 2008, gCarbon 2008h will be held in Nagano, mainly supported by CSJ. The importance of CSJ has been growing now and in the future.

The element "carbon" has been attracted a lot of attentions. It began in the 21st century, and it is now expected as the central material opening up a new century instead of Ge and Si which belong to the same group. It originated to a bamboo charcoal filament for electric bulbs of Edison in the 20th century and it was carbon fiber that opened up the space age. The artificial diamond also appeared. The pencil made of graphite appeared in the 16th century and was predominantly used. The element "carbon" has affected deeply our civilization and technological development such as carbon black for tires, carbon for steel manufacture, and so on. And, in coming century, carbon will associate with base technologies in energy, environment, IT and bio/ medical care. The fuel cell is one of the examples. This is the mass of carbon and is going to produce innovation in the area of mobile electronics and a motor vehicle. The carbon technologies including the lithium ion battery and the capacitor will take a leading role in the 21st century. A role of CSJ became more important with the times. The CSJfs contribution to science and technologies would be widely expected. It should enhance the international researches and promote cooperation among government, industry and academia. It is also expected to be a place for interactive communications among members. In addition, we try to make the journal "TANSO" fulfill the wide demands of members. The carbon technology is now facing a good opportunity to achieve the further developments. As a president, I will make an effort for CSJ to contribute to science, technologies, and also enhance young researchers.
